The new Benriach 10 yo–Tasting notes

So, a new Benriach 10 year old? what’s so “new” about it? well this – This release is the first one that was  produced predominantly from spirit distilled under The BenRiach Distillery Company’s eleven-year ownership. The cask formula focuses on ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, while the spirit is unpeated (unlike the Curiositas 10 yo).

BenRiach 10 Year Old , 43.0% , £31 benriach-10-year-old-whisky (1)

Nose: A rather big and full kind of Jose: starting on green apples (Granny Smith) , malt and vanilla as well as some red ripe apples. Creamy vanilla with allspice and cloves.

Palate:  lovely oily and full With quite a spicy tang. The apples are stewed rather than fresh and the vanilla is present but not as powerful. Hints of Lotus biscuits develop with time.

Finish: Medium long. Mainly pear and apple peel , spices and dark chocolate. Dry and slightly bitter.

Bottom line:

While This is not a ground breaking whisky, it is a great example of well made basic core line whisky, we’ve come to expect from Benriach. A rich nose, with a full palate, classic style, no frills and no tricks. Whisky, to be enjoyed. It would make a great daily dram. Good work, and keep it up!

Score: 85/100
