Old Hobart Overeem Port Matured – 43%

Another quick hop down under as we try this Port cask matured Overeem. Originally this was the very first Overeem I tasted a year or so ago (Many thanks to my Australian friend David L.). I liked it very much, but for a reason that escapes me now I’ve never written any tasting notes. Thankful to Overeem UK for this sample, I finally set down to write proper notes.

Overeem Port Matured, 43.0% , £139Overeem-port-43

Again, this whisky was matured in small port casks (chopped down to hold less liquid) holding 100 litres, and due to that the maturation is faster.

Nose: Feels sweet on first whiff with some wine gums and a herbal note. Maybe hints of ginger and liquorice. Creamy and fruity with dark plums, Sweet juices and sultanas in liquor.

Palate: Starts sweet and creamy with a touch of spiciness , sweet doughnut dough and chocolate filled with cherries, topped with ginger powder.

Finish: plum jam. Sultana and syrup.

Another great whisky, and quite different than the sherry, being less sweet, creamier and spicy.A nice balance of sweet, oak, fruity and spicy notes.  Not sure whether I prefer this one to the Sherry, or the other way around.

Score: 86/100
