With all that’s going on locally, I find it harder to find the muse for writing tasting notes, but let’s try a few new drams bottled for this year’s TWE whisky show (I missed, I know).
This one’s a 15-year-old Caol Ila, adorned with the faces of a few TWE employees such as Polina Malinovskaja / Liz Lock / Ashish Basnet – quite a nice idea isn’t it?
Caol Ila 2008 , 15 year old – Whisky Show 2024 , £105
Nose: Aromas of roasted chestnuts and frangipane tart, accompanied by a touch of freshly lit bonfire and a hint of candied lemon peel alongside charred pine needles and mint.
Palate: Rich dark smokiness blends with sweet almond paste, highlighted by a light dusting of vanilla, deep think smoky syrup, and hints of fig jam, pepper and chilly.
Finish: lingering warmth with smoky and sweet almond undertones, chilly flakes, and fig jam. It’s quite long and lovely.
Conclusion: A lovely autumnal dram, with the right combination of smoke, spice, sweetness and depth. Great alongside some dark 85% fine chocolate. try and enjoy!
Score: 89/100
Stay safe, and dram on!
