It’s been a while since I last blogged. I know…
Why, Do you ask? I was not in the mood, and then all hell broke loose with the Gaza situation, and I was not feeling like writing about anything. With all that’s going on here, I almost forgot Black Friday is upon us, can you imagine that?
Just like in recent years, TWE’s take on BF is quite different- they are releasing a one-off black bottle with no indication of the distillery at a very competitive price that is usually very good VFM.
Thanks to DHL who delivered the bottle BEFORE it goes on sale tomorrow morning (6:00 am GMT, or 08:00 IST), I was able to have a sneaky wee tasting beforehand which is nice. The whisky was Distilled at Glenkinchie and matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks.
Let’s taste some, then…
TWE Black Friday edition 2023, 15 yo Lowland single malt, 54.2% abv, £84.95
Nose: Fruity and fresh with quite a lot of grassy notes up front, then off to orchard fruits – mainly peaches and pears, maybe green apples too, some caramel candy as well as a zesty citrusy note. More sniffing reveals wildflower blossom and more candied orange peel.
Palate: Fruity and sweet with the green apples and peach cobbler, there’s also a nice sultana sweetness all around with a hint of zingy ginger powder. More fruit can be found in the form of poached ripe pears sprinkled with baking spices and tasty oak. A nice hint of wax, maybe slightly chalky – towards the very end.
Finish: Fresh scones with butter, a hint of apricot jam and baking spices.
Conclusion: Rich, fresh, and fruity – a lovely Lowlands 15-year-old whisky if I Might say so. I might get myself one or two. Kinchie fans, rejoice – and the rest – enjoy.
Score: 87/100
