TWE is celebrating its 50th anniversary since Sukhinder’s family went into the whisky and drinks business. to Celebrate this milestone they have released quite a few very unique and highly interesting expressions, one of which is today’s whisky.
this one’s a very special Lagavulin, bottled especially for the 50th anniversary of the family of The Whisky Exchange’s co-founders, Sukhinder and Rajbir Singh, opening their west London drinks shop and starting the journey that would lead to The Whisky Exchange. Aged in a single first-fill PX hogshead for 31 years…
Lagavulin 31 yo 1991 ‘Casks of Distinction’, TWE , 49.2%
Nose: Deep and dark, a pile of burning peat embers, and heavy dark sweet, and ripe fruit – mostly dark cherries and raisins, but also quite coastal with the signature tarry rope, hessian sacks on top of beach bonfire, with a hint of seaspray, very classy and becoming of its older age.
Palate: Starting with sweet dark fruit, and lots of sultana goodness, then smoke, dark teas, mint and licorice candy, and more macerated cherries all engulfed with soot and coal dusting. There’s also a spicy tang mostly of ground peppercorns, smoky dried chipotle, and dark chocolate on top of ripe berries.
Finish: Very long, with a lot of dark chocolate filled with sweet dark fruit, earthy peat, and coal embers going on for a very very long time.
Conclusion: Excellent quality older PX cask Lagavulin, just as good as i had hoped it would be! Sold out, unfortunately. What a way to celebrate your 50th Anniversary.
