TWE has released 2 quite different Millstone whiskies – They are both bottled in celebration of the 50th anniversary of TWE co-founders Sukhinder and Rajbir’s family’s starting in the drinks industry. These are just the first of many appearing over the coming months…
the first one is a 2017 Millstone peated Dutch single malt that was specially selected by The Whisky Exchange and bottled in 2022, after five years in a single oloroso sherry cask.
Millstone Peated 2017 , 5 yo Oloroso Sherry Cask TWE, £59.95
nose: Big sherry sweetness with oodles of dried fruit – sultanas, dates, figs, the whole 9 yards.. prune juice, lapsang tea, sweet smoky bacon in a marinade, there’s also plenty of toasted oak, salted caramel dipped popcorn, licorice, and more black tea, even some cigar leaves ending on a wee hint of olives.
Palate: spicy peppery entry, there’s also plenty of Lapsang tea on the palate too, in addition to sweet smoke and dried fruit compote. There’s a nice ashy note, spent cigars, and more of the glazed BBQed bacon. The spicy chilly heat makes a comeback with plenty of sweet wine tannins. Sherry on steroids!
Finish: Licorice, burnt sugar, and sweet sultanas juices, with a nice sweet-smoky and very long finish.
Conclusion: A truly lovely deep sherry with a nice smoky edge to it. Jammy, meaty and sweet with ample spice. Sherry heads with an affinity to peat and sherry will love it – a true winter warmer if there ever was one…
