Not much info about this one other than that it’s vintage 1996 matured in a single hogshead for 25 years, and bottled in at 51.1%.
Ben Nevis is gaining a lot of popularity in recent years, and the 10-year-old is a staple, this one’s much older, and it’s going to be interesting seeing how the Ben Nevis dirty signature keeps after a quarter of a century in wood…
Ben Nevis 1996 (TWE) , 51.1% , £240 (Sold out)
Nose: musty old wood, with a dirty touch to it, granny smith green apples, lemongrass tea, pastries and some cereal, and fresh kiwis on top of it all. giving it some time and adding some water I’m getting some minty notes. very fine nose.
Palate: if the nose was lovely the palate is just brilliant: with fruit galore, mostly on tropical fruit: pineapple, guava, mango, papaya, you name it, it has got it, with the green apples in the background, and sweet pastries and wood spices, with a nice peppery touch this showcases great casks adding so much to the liquid in the 25 years of maturation. On the money!
Finish: Long with the tropical fruit going on for a long time, mainly on the pineapple and guava, vanilla, with a gingery touch and a wee dirty note.
perfect.
Conclusion: Cracking stuff. too bad it’s sold out. a beautiful tropical dram.
