Seems that DD and the sponge did acquire quite a bit of Ballechin stock, and this one’s partly Ballechin as well. Partly you say? Yes indeed, this is a mix of non-peated Edradour cask (First Fill Sherry Butt) and a peated Ballechin from a refill Hoggie.

Edradour Et al:

I used to dread Edradour a few years back, their funky notes of used socks and god knows what did not quite do it for me. However, I must admit something good is happening over there and recent OB and IB Edradours are much better. As for Ballechin – I like the dirty peaty character, and I was hoping for a nice mas-up of the two.

Nose: Big sweet sherry notes, sticky caramel, damp old wood, mint, pine needles, licorice, and sweet smoke, smoked meats in a sweet marinade, tobacco leaves, and dunnage warehouses. deep, dark, and delicious?

Palate: big and powerful. with some gunpowder, sherry, and dark fruit, among tobacco smoke, and zingy cinnamon spice, along with pepper, and chilly flakes, ripe cherries spent embers lapsang tea and blood orange marmalade

Finish: More of the Lapsang tea, sweet smoke, peat, ash, and pepper.

Conclusion: It’s true in many cases that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts: A true wintery dram, for the sherry/peat lovers, it’s full of lovely sweet notes, and tobacco. Would accompany a good cigar rather nicely, I would think. Good mixing!
