As you probably know by now, TWE is celebrating its 20th!! anniversary, having been founded in 1999 by the Singh brothers, and throughout 2019 they will be celebrating their 20th birthday with exclusive bottlings, offers and special events. This month they are officially launching their anniversary year with a range of single-cask, cask-strength whiskies from Signatory Vintage.
The first bottling of the series I am going to review is a sherried Clynelish. Made in 1995 at Clynelish distillery, this Highland single malt spent a quarter of a century in a single refill sherry butt before it was bottled in March 2019 by Signatory Vintage.
Clynelish 1995, 23 yo for TWE (20th Anniversary) , 55.4% , £155
Nose: Lovely big sherried nose , with fruit jam, sultanas and chocolate, it’s got a more earthy note to it, with the fruit, which is quite nice. The sherry is however very clean , not a trace of sulfur which is nice if you’re a sherry fan but sensitive to sulfur. water brings out more aromas of plums , fig spread and spice, and even brioche bread.
Palate: Very nice mouthfeel as well , quite oily and viscous with the sherry sweetness are in the foreground : there’s fruitcake, with sultana and fig galore, a certain nutty touch as well, with the chocolate making a comeback, as well as thick toffee, white pepper and star anise, and burnt caramel. rich and rewarding.
Finish: Quite long with more chocolate, toasted oak, sultanas and nuts and even black tea.
Conclusion: This is a delicious dram. Love the deep, earthy and complex older sherried dram. It’s really excellent. Recommended.
Score: 91/100
