The Islay Festival is in full swing,{check out my Feis Ile 2018 bottling guide to know what to expect } and what is more fitting, than reviewing a peated malt. As you all know Port Askaig is bottled by Elixir Distillers (which is a doughtier company of TWE), and features malts from Islay without specifing the distillery the casks are sourced from. What is also nice about PA is that they bottles their expressions in small batches each consisting of 10’s of casks and not 100’s, this one’s been bottled from the vatting of 11 first-fill bourbon casks, which are all “sister” casks of the LMDW single cask aged 14 yo. Bottled at 45,8% and available from TWE for £68.
When we’re talking PA, people are always sure the casks come from Caol Ila distillery (which I am sure is true sometimes), but this one’s certainly comes from a different distillery TWE site states:
‘Sourced from a distillery that rarely releases peated whiskies’
It does not take a genius to guess the distillery over there (starts with Bunna), right?
Port Askaig 14 yo, Bourbon cask, 45,8% abv , £68 (TWE)
Conclusion:
A nicely peated Bunny, with some fruit, peat, earth soot and pepper, very enjoyable, and feels complex enough. Recommended drink for the peat lovers out there. Like.
