Black Friday is upon us and TWE is spreading some whisky joy on this year’s shopping holiday. Rather than discounting whisky on the site (or raising prices, then discounting them as some shops do), they decided to take a different approach this time and bottle a special edition single cask. This cask , aged for 16 long years in a cask that yielded 582 bottles bottled at Cask Strength of 54.6% from an distillery in Speyside will be on sale exactly today from 0600 am (GMT) on the TWE blog.
Fortunately, i got a sneak preview of the whisky, and managed to write some tasting notes, a few days before this goes on sale. So, if you’re feeling like grabbing a bottle, head over to TWE Black Friday page, and count the minutes… At any rate, lets taste..
Not many details, but what I was able to dig out is : It was aged for 16 years in a single sherry butt before bottling in October 2017 (1st fill). It comes from a very well known family owned Speyside distillery, and we all know what this means… right?
Nose: Lovely sweet/ spicy mix , starting with pepper, ripe mandarin and ginger powder , there are some orchard fruit present as well, mostly peaches and fresh apricot, juicy and ripe, with the wood balancing it all. It’s not overly sweet, and the spices and fruit are well integrated.
Palate: thicker and spicier, with quite some fresh ground pepper, chilly and zingy ginger. when the wave of spicy goodness passes, we discover a sweet sultana note, with bitter oak, and more ripe peaches, with a nice sherry note as well. A bit of candied orange, and more of the sweet juicy fruit in sweet-ish nectar, big and oily. very nice stuff.
Finish: ripe orange, pepper and oak with a zingy edge.
A great combination of spice, sweetness, and fruit. Lovely way to celebrate #BlackFriday… And the pricing is amazing, especially for this “family owned speyside distillery” *wink wink *
way to go TWE. very nice stuff.
Score: 89/100

A few interesting TWE exclusives landed not long ago, and the first of which we'll be tasting is this Kavalan Vinho. Essentially this is a cask-strength, single-cask Kavalan distilled in June 2012, aged entirely in a wine barrique and bottled in 2018, exclusively for The Whisky Exchange. Kavalan Vinho Barrique…
A single cask Red Spot whisky? those are very rare... well, this is the first single-cask Red Spot ever created exclusively for The Whisky Exchange. Aged entirely at Midleton distillery in County Cork and finished in Sicilian Marsala casks. 1991, sounds intriguing. and Marsala casks can be lovely. I was…
if you're been following the TWE site. you may have noticed there's a new Kilchoman Exclusive bottled for TWE... A 10 year old Kilchoman, can't be bad right? I remember the times when Kilchoman was pretty young and only chugging out 3 yo expression, and I was saying to myself,…
