Four new single casks bottled Exclusively for TWE by Signatory were released a few days ago (This one, a 2007 Coal Ila, a 1995 Imperial and a 1998 Mortlach), and I will be taking a look at those new releases in the coming days or so. I’ve chosen to start with the oldest, a 1988 vintage Blair Athol. This is a 27 year old whisky, matured in a refill sherry butt. Not many Blair Athol tasting notes on the blog until now (two, to be exact), and I was quite curious. 565 bottles of this are available and i am sure they will sell well.
Blair Athol 27 yo 1988 55,7%, sherry butt #6845
Nose : sweet and thick with big sherry on top of caramelized apples, raisins and spice. Big bold sherry, heavy with tobacco, wax and red fruit, spices and pepper.
Palate : lots of sherry goodness with chocolate and Xmas cake, chilly, more truffle and raisins soaked in liquor, Apple peel and damp earth / dark tea leaf.
Finish : chocolate, spice, orange marmalade, medium length.
A very good, big sherried dram (although it’s a refill), not your summer tipple (at least not in my neck of the woods), but It will make a great after meal dram in autumn / winter time. Sherry heads would love that.
