After the quite excellent Circus blended whisky, here’s another one of the latest expressions from Compass Box, this time a blended malt. As you well know Compass box is fighting towards more transparency in whisky, meaning full disclosure of the age of the whiskies used in their creations, and have started their Transparency Campaign after their Flaming heart release was deemed “violating SWA laws” by the SWA… They can not state the age of the components here but they will tell us what they can : this blend is made of 48% young Clynelish from first-fill American oak barrels , 37% middle-aged Glentauchers from first-fill American oak barrels , 11% middle-aged Balblair from first-fill American oak barrels and some 4% middle-aged Mortlach from rejuvenated American oak barrels.
Compass Box Enlightenment , 46.0% , £59.45 [MOM]
Nose : fresh and quite light and crisp with lemon zest, citrus and granny Smith green apples, Hay and vanilla with hints of floral and green pear, more vanilla custard and cream,a bit of wax.
Palate : more green fresh apple and pear, cut grass, then getting bitter sweet with toasted oak, wax and pepper, with ginger powder and a nutty edge.
Finish: oak, citrus and pepper with vanilla custard.
A rather fresh and highly enjoyable dram, with nice creaminess, balanced nicely by the citrus. Well priced too at under 60 quid. Not as big as the Circus but quite good and available, so get one , you want it…
