Strathisla distillery is the oldest continuously operating distillery in Scotland, founded in 1786 and operating since then, but as you may well know, there aren’t many bottling of the stuff to be found, since most goes into the Chivas line of blends, as the distillery is owned by the Chivas Bros. (Pernod Ricard). This semi “official” G&M bottling comes from a first fill sherry filled with whisky in 1967, and bottled in 2015. The colour says it all. I think this is maybe the first very old Strathisla i am tasting, and it’s just lovely. This is another dram from G&M’s “The wood makes the whisky”, and what a better way to demonstrate that , than this excellent old cask.
Strathisla 1967 (bottled 2015) – G&M , 43% abv
Nose: fantastic stuff. Old polished wood benches, lovely wood. Xmas cake, and rich Oloroso sherry, dates, figs , prunes. You name it it has it all. A sour note of balsamic. Delicious sherry notes, old sherry with Clove, cardamom and cinnamon, and a nice citrus marmalade note.
Palate: some more of that old majestic sherry, with the dry fruit , and lots of oaky goodness. Old libraries. Shelves with a hint of dust. Some eucalyptus and chocolate , spice and Xmas cake. Orange marmalade, and rum n raisin chocolate. Deep. Complex. Tons of wood. I love it.
Finish : long. Figs, dates , dry oak and a bit herbal
Superb stuff, a sherry celebration, but what a refined and well aged sort of sherry this is. You’ve got everything you can expect from a great older cask, the polished oak , the fruit, and the chocolate / marmalade / spice combo. Superb. You will need deep pockets to get one of those (surely over 700 Euro or so), but it’s excellent.
