Passover is upon us, and I’m taking this week off malt and whisk(e)y, to taste some kosher drams, mainly Armagnac and maybe some Mezcal if time permits. I’ve written about the older vintage 1940 of the same distillery (S.Christeau) which was quite epic, and I had high expectations for this one as well. 10 years younger, but 19 bloody 50 is enough time for it to become awesome, right? Let’s dive in.
Saint Christeau vintage 1950, 40% abv
Nose: Heaps of dark chocolate and raisin on top of old wood, figs and sweet desert wine , spice and leather with hints of balsamic vinegar, and stewed red fruit.
Palate : Sweet and thick almost chewable, with nuts, a shot of Espresso and dark chocolate covered figs, dates. Getty dry and bitter towards the end.
Finish: Bitter chocolate, almonds and wood. Dry.
This is an excellent drop of drammage, my friends, and even though it’s not “AS” good as the 1940, it’s bloody excellent. and for 243 EUR, you can get liquid that was distilled in the 1950’s, which is just awesome.
I guess every whisky lover has to have a nice bottle of this sort of stuff for days you want to try something different, but excellent in other respects. It won’t make you give up whisky, but It will put a smile on your face.
Cheers goes to Sjoerd, for arranging this bottle share.
Is Armangac Kosher?
yes Stu. It is kosher for passover 😉 as it does not include any grain. only grapes…
it’s basically wine, so that might also depend on what kind of kosher you keep. for me it is 😉
Gal my good friend, just to be clear to your followers, anything that is “wine based” must be certified by a reputable authority that it is kosher. IMHO you cannot state on a blog that something is kosher just because you hold that it is. Not only was it not “kosher for Passover but it is “not kosher” period. There are some very good Cognacs on the market that are certified as kosher. Looking forward to reading your new whisky blogs, they are a great read. Thanks
well, I am of course no expert. merely trying not to post grain based liquid on Passover. I know quite a few god fearing jews who drink this stuff and say it is kosher enough for them. at any rate, today we’re back to whisky.
