In case you’ve been living on the moon recently a no introduction to Cù Bòcan is required. This is the only peated line of whisky from Tomatin. The “regular” expression is matured in a combination of Sherry, Virgin Oak and Bourbon casks, while Tomtain has also released expressions that showcase only one type of wood used for the vatting of Cù Bòcan , and this is the third in this line (see tasting notes of the Virgin oak , and sherry cask) . This limited edition showcases the influence that Bourbon has on lightly peated Tomatin single malt. Released a few months ago it’s widely available
Tomatin Cù Bòcan Bourbon Cask , 46.0% , £49 / €64,99
Nose: Creamy barley and pear drops on a toffee and sweet honeyed backdrop. Light peaty tang with sandalwood and toasted oak. Wee hint of candied pineapple.
Palate : vanilla and nuts as well as classic coconut notes we often find in good ex bourbon casks. Chocolate and spice and a hint of ripe oranges. Smoke. Light. But it’s here.
Finish : long. Creamy and lightly smoky milk chocolate.
This is a lovely NAS, with a wee bit of peat, which is almost unnoticeable. I find the bourbon cask appealing, and slightly better than the virgin wood, although not as good as the sherry wood. This concludes the series of separate wood casks used in the Cù Bòcan vatting, again, brilliant idea from Tomatin. No wonder they are becoming one of the most popular whisky-geek oriented whisky distilleries. Keep it up guys!
