After the disappointment in the two single casks of yesterday, we come to taste another sample sent from the W.Club (Whisky Shop). This cask was bottled by Hunter Laing, for their Sovereign line of Single Grain whiskies. Strathclyde Distillery stands on the south bank of the River Clyde in the Gorbals district of Glasgow, and was built by the long established, London-based distiller and blender, Seager Evans in 1927. It was originally intended to produce spirit for rectification into gin and later, when they acquired the well-known brand, Long John, for whisky blending. 25 year old grains have a lot of potential at least in the eyes of a single grain lover like myself… at almost 60% abv, this looks very promising, right?
Strathclyde 25 Years Old 1989 The Sovereign , 59.7% , £125
Nose: ach… This is good stuff .. Thick vanilla and nail varnish remover. Quite some old wood which I adore. Golden syrup, and exotic fruit. Pineapple and balsamic vinegar. This is very bourbon-y indeed. I’m loving it.
Palate: Lovely sweet and spicy entry , followed by dollops of spice infused syrup. Brilliant varnish and oak, some caramel as well as grapefruit and pineapple. Very fruity. Cinnamon and pepper. Superb.
Finish: Creamy and spicy. Hot cinnamon. Chocolate. Rum and raisin ice cream.
A great dram , with the right balance of wood, spice, fruit. A real party on the palate and nose, for those who appreciate a good grain. Good choice of cask here, guys. Not exactly cheap, but lovely.
