MaltStock is over, and I am settling down (a separate post about that soon). As always I was very happy to meet so many nice people, share a few drams, and on the way collect a few samples people were kind enough to bestow upon me. Billy from the TWE was kind to share samples of the exclusive bottling for The Whisky Exchange, Two of them were this GD PX cask, and the Benriach finished in PX (which I already ordered blind, and not tasted it at that time ). Let’s start with this one, and continue to the BenRiach 1998 tomorrow (both are very good). The bottle at hand was aged for 19 years and bottled from a Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheon. I am quite the GlenDronach fan when it comes to sherry casks (If you recall my review of the Hielan), and this dram is indeed rather nice (as Billy would put it).
Glendronach 1995 19 Year Old PX Puncheon TWE Exclusive , 55.4% , £110 
Nose: now , this one is rich. Sweet. Concentrated sherry goodness all around. Thick ripe sultanas , Xmas cake , thick thighs free and treacle. Macerated dried raisins in rum. Marzipan. Thick and juicy. Oh dear. Sherry at its best. Vinous. Traces of balsamic. Well aged balsamic , that is…
Palate: Big ass sherry going on here but clean. No sulfur. Tons of sultana covered with rich chocolate, some nuts and plums too. A touch of espresso too, and cinnamon / clove that counterpart the sweet sherry. Good balance yet rich and chewy.
Finish : dry with more vinous effect. Dried raisins and chocolate mocha cappuccino.
Bottom line: A delicious whisky indeed, sweet, with all the PX notes you might expect (although it’s not HUGELY sherried, if you’re looking for that). It might not be the most complex single cask sherry GD around, (not as good as cask #3400 1994 vintage) but it’s a lot of fun, for the upcoming fall nights.
