Yes, we’re coming to the end of our little journey through the HB range, and last but certainly not least its the oldest offering from the brand : the 40 year old blend. Old blends are something I really like, and I’ve had a few of those over the years (Black Bull 40 , The General from compass box to name a few), and this was one reason I was really looking forward to trying this one. Old blends don’t come cheap, and some malt snobs are really missing on some beautiful whiskies when they are not willing to try or pay good money for such old creations. All i am saying is : give blends a chance. they deserve it. And now after my short monolog, let’s get going with the tasting notes, shall we?
Hankey Bannister 40 year old, 43.3% abv, £643(MOM)
Nose: Starts quite shy, but not timid. It’s quite fresh, not a lot of that very old wood you often get from 40 year old blends or malts, which i really like, but here that is replaced with a nice dose of chocolate, sultana and cherries, as well as ripe blood oranges. add some spices into the mix, and you’ve got a nice nose.
Palate: Oh yes, Hankey Bannister has arrived! this is a delicious palate we’ve got here, and that come as no surprise. Still quite fresh, without a lot of wood, but very delicious and luxurious it is, for sure. starts creamy, then the orange and mandarin covered with quality chocolate enter and entertain your palate.
Finish: Long, and rewarding, with chocolate, ripe mandarin, and a hint of grapefruit and nut and raisin chocolate.
Bottom line:
Quite delicious and so easy to drink a few drams, at this price, this is real danger! If you’re into good whisky and you want to impress someone who’s not into heavy wood influence, then this is your chance to make an impression. Sure it’s not cheap, but for those who appreciate good blended whiskies, it may be just what’s needed. Good stuff. Impressive.
