Time for a bit of SMWS goodness (I got a lot of those babies I need to taste in the queue, but this was long due). Sample Provided by Johanne (whiskylassie), and seems to be a SMWS Canada release. This is a Glenrothes, so one can indeed expect a lot of that butterscotch and toffee going on (if OBs is something to judge from), but lo and behold, no Caramel, at a strength that is above 40% (yes, guys-that’s a wee hint). I must admit i had to google the word Crumpet (i had no idea whatsoever what it was), you live and learn… This lovely dram seems still to be available for sale , not very cheap though at over 90 quid (if you switch Canadian $ to pounds). The whisky was aged in a Refill Gorda, ex sherry (which is a 600 liter huge cask),hence the number of bottles
SMWS 30.71 Burnt crumpet & Highland Toffee 14 yo , 57.5% abv, $173
Nose: Oh my. What a party of sweet and intense sherried notes we’ve got young on here. Tons of butterscotch candy. Old school kind of. Vanilla. Rubber. Lots of sherry effect here and indeed tons of sulphur too.
Palate: sugar colossus. Vanilla pods. Big sherry with that sulphur touch. Caramel candy with pepper , meaty stuff alright.
Finish: sweet Demerara sugar. Drying. Sine tannins. Hint of plum juice.
This is a big bold, candied dram. lot’s of the toffee indeed. If you’re sensitive to sulphur, this one is not for you, on the other side, if you’re a fan of a bit of that, you’re in for a real treat. A desert dram, if there was ever one.
