After tasting the aged offerings from Teeling whiskey (namely the 21, 26 and 30), it’s time to get more realistic, and try the more affordable releases. Surely, not many can afford the more expensive stuff, but surely the two younger offerings are budget friendly drams. the first of the two I am going to visit is the single Grain. Grain whisky is often thought of as “inferior” or as “that stuff they put in cheap blends to lower the costs” or whatever. That is not really true, and more and more lovely single grains are released, some of which were reviewed on the blog (check out our Grain reviews here). What’s interesting about this Grain whiskey is that it was matured full term in Californian Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrels, adding more complexity and finesse to the grain distillate.
Teeling Single Grain , 46.0% , £38
Nose: This is grain whiskey alright. Bright. Sweet with a sort of corn note to it. Apple vinegar, vanilla, sugar and honey. Buttery with a fruity edge: berries and grapes with some sandalwood dust.
Palate: Starting sweet with vanilla flan, some grapes, golden syrup. Corn bread. Mint. Creamy and sweet. Some fruit at the end.
Finish: Syrup, mint, nail varnish. Apple peel.
Bottom line:
This is a fresh, fruity and sweet dram. Great on the rocks or neat. It’s Summer, and I have a feeling this whiskey will be the perfect companion for the hot and humid Israeli evenings.
