Nothing like a good peated 1997 Bunny to get you going and please the peat buds. 1997 Bunnahabhains are quite common among Indie bottlers, this was the year Bunnahabhain started producing heavily peated malt too, and i guess many casks were sold to IB’s I’ve reviewed quite a bit of 1997 Bunnies, and they are usually very nice, this one is no different.
The Bosun’s Dram 1997 – Wemyss Malts (Bunnahabhain), 46.0%, £75
Nose: Lovely smoke, with a sweet tone to it (think grilled bacon), a bit of soot too, and earthiness, ginger powder and a certain fruit I can not pinpoint.
Palate: Salt and pepper, with the initial salty entry then chilly and crushed peppercorns, spicy, some cured meat, and smoky apple strudel.
Finish:Cinnamon, smoke, sweet dough.
My 2 cents:
A great dram all in all, delivers the peat punch, but with those lovely fruit , a salty edge and the smoky apples. Can’t ask for more. Peat with class.
Available online at Master of Malt (and others too).
