Widow Jane 7 yo Kentucky Bourbon

This bourbon sold by the Widow Jane distillery is actually not distilled there but in Kentucky, so essentially what they do is buy the liquid and dilute it with water from their own water source the PR mumble says:.

The water used to create this product comes from the Widow Jane mine in Rosendale, New York. Rosendale Limestone possesses an even higher ratio of beneficial minerals than that found in Kentucky and its sparkling waters are as pure as its namesake, the Widow Jane. The greatest structures in New York are from the gargantuan caissons that allowed the Brooklyn Bridge to soar, to the Statue of Liberty’s 27,000 ton pedestal, to the Empire State Building itself are all held fast and strong by that Rosendale stone.

A combination of unfiltered 91 proof Bourbon and highly mineralized water can lead to a very slight cloudiness (calcium) in the bottle which appears when agitated. It is yet another attractive part of this package. Widow Jane Whiskey is a true New York City whiskey, evocative of both the rock that created the foundation for this city of skyscrapers and the forward looking, DIY spirit that has made Brooklyn the center of a new artisanal food and beverage movement.

I know there was quite a debate some time ago when the label of this whiskey was a bit shady, and did not actually say it was Kentucky Bourbon inside, implying that they distillted the liquid themselves, but as I see it now, this has been resolved. The distillery itself called

CACAO PRIETO produces bourbon now, but it’s very young, and certainly not 7 year old, as well as producing their well known small batch, cacao-based liqueurs and rums (which sadly i have not tried).  This long due sample was sent by my good friends Shai (thanks mate), and he deserves quite a bit of credit for my bourbon education of recent.

Widow Jane 7 yo Kentucky Bourbon, 91 proof (45.5% abv), $57.99widowj

Nose: Slightly fruity with an earthy note. Wood varnish and maybe some old leather. Vanilla and nail polish remover. Nutty (think: Macadamia nuts) Not a bad nose at all.

Palate: starts spicy then turns sweeter and even mildly chocolaty. Tart Tatin. Vanilla and mint.

Finish: mint. Pepper and ail polish remover. Vanilla and spicy oak with hints of bubble gum and cinnamon.

It’s certainly a nice Bourbon, though not ground breaking stuff. enjoyable and tasty, great neat or on the rocks.

Score: 84/100

  1. Another hipster situation.
So tired of the word-smithing to make something seem exciting and fresh…and EXPENSIVE.
Their products are all the same – a facade. As noted in the first paragraphs. The dude who created this company, as well as the chocolate branch, only knows how to weedle and deceive. The whole “make you think this bourbon is made here” stuff…and then the real truth is finally put on the bottle. Stright up lies and deception. Not to mention charging a fee to tour the “distillery”. How ridiculous!
This is the essence of how it all was created. On a thin tissue of lies, just skimming by with enough sheeps wool to make everyone believe it, hoping no one sneezes. Ugh – so tired of this sort of “business” in my neighborhood, jackin up my rent!!!
