It’s Feis Ile week, and I know Kilchoman day is not until Thursday, but I feel like posting this review today, so that’s that. For some reason never tasted the first batch of Loch Gorm, so I can’t really compare the two batches (anyone got a wee sample for batch #1? send it over to WI towers, and you shall get something nice in return too – just comment).
basically this is a limited edition (well, quite limited not very very limited) of 17,100 bottles, and the whisky is 5 year old, Fully matured from filling to bottling in fresh Oloroso sherry butts, which add a nice sweet side to the peated profile and named after the famously peaty loch in front of the distillery on Islay; Kilchoman draws the water for Loch Gorm from the burn that runs into the loch.
Kilchoman Loch Gorm batch #2, 46% abv, £57.95 (The whisky Exchange) 
Nose: BBQ-ed meat in sweet sauce. Cinnamon and ash, plums. Soot and sea spray. Mint and a bit of basil. It’s quite earthy too.
Palate: Earth , soot peat and quite a lot of chilly. Peppermint gum and maybe some cinnamon gum too: The hot and spicy yet sweet type. Bacon and then Smoked fish and fig jam. Sweet yet smoky and maritime.
Finish: Long. Salty. Sweet. Malt and sweet BBQ sauce and hints of Bacon.
A delicious Kilchoman, on the sweet and spicy side, with enough peat, soot and smoked meat/fish combination. Making it very very drinkable, and very approachable. The peat and sherry work very well here. Good stuff. If you’re an Islay fan or a Kilchoman guy in particular, this is a no brainer of a purchase, although it’s not cheap for a 5 year old whisky.
