So, Prohibition. Yes, that stupid period in American (and world) history when the government thought they know better… We all know how this ended.
Prohibition was a time when Cutty Sark established itself in the US and this new blend is a tribute to the notorious Captain William McCoy, who smuggled the brand into the country and whose reputation for fairness and supplying unadulterated liquor gave rise to Cutty Sark being referred to as ‘the real McCoy’. This is a new bottling meant mainly for the US market, bottled at 50% ABV (100 proof), in a brand new bottle (retro) black and quite stylish, but how good is the liquid? We’re about to find out…
Cutty Sark Prohibition edition , 50% ABV, $30
Nose: Starts quite nicely and malty with apples , malt and cereal. Old style? maybe, Whiffs of distant smoke and hints of Lemon pie complemented by some vanilla and a touch of butterscotch, and toffee.
Palate: It’s pretty huge. Starting with pepper smoke and malt then getting fruitier with stewed apples lemon and toffee, with some dark chocolate praline, and again, pepper.
Finish: Medium. Smoke. Toffee , pepper, and Earth.
Quite spicy and peppery, malty and also sweet, this is not as fresh as other versions of cutty, but I quite like that intensity. A very interesting dram, and for $30 you’re getting a whole lot of whisky. Very interesting, and ‘different’ Cutty. It’s a US edition, but hey – Lots of US readers out there. so Enjoy!
