Auchentoshan is indeed one of the most underrated single malt distilleries out there. I am not sure why, but most people do think of this Lowland distillery as a producer of uninteresting , light bodied malts. I know I have shown it’s not exactly true, with the help of the Toshan man Mark D, and a few samples we swapped a year and more ago. While some new Auchentoshans (the Valinch for example, and hopefully the new Virgin oak) display a rather interesting profile with lots of flavours, the entry level ones are indeed somewhat , boring.. But, not this one. Thanks to my whisky friend and blogger Bozzy (who runs a whisky blog too) who was kind enough to send over a sample, managed to sample this lovely Duty free only expression.
Auchentoshan Silver Oak , 21 yo, 51.5 % abv
Nose: Very sweet and creamy nose. Sweet dough, vanilla sugar, wood and vanilla seeds. Ripe Melons With time it’s getting more floral and less sweet with ginger and pine wood.
Palate: Vanilla and ginger candy. Pepper and some zest of a lemon. Sweet dough again, creamy and powerful.
Finish: fruit, spice with a bitter touch. Long.
Not a shy Auchentoshan. Reminds me if the Valinch in some aspects. But more complex, and very good value. Too bad it was travel retail only. Not seen it recently when passing through DF.
Score: 88/100
Cheers to Bozzy for the sample
