Time for another of the latest BR single casks just released. Not a peated cask this time but equally interesting : this one is triple distilled (yes, you read that right T-r-i-p-l-e) which is quite unusual for the Benriach as only a small fraction of the spirit distilled annualy is triple distilled there. It has been matured for 15 years then finished in a Pedro Ximénez sherry puncheon to be bottled at 56.10% abv only recently. Only 630 bottles are available.
BenRiach 15 Year Old 1998 (cask 7633) Triple distilled/PX Finish,£60.99
Nose: Thick sherry but with some fruity aromas besides the obvious dried fruits : hint of pineapple , balsamic , spice mix , caramel ,toffee and some wood varnish.
Palate: Lovely stuff going on here. Sweet fruit with a touch of pineapple in vanilla sauce, toffee and butterscotch all with bits if pepper here and there.
Finish: Dried fruit and toffee.
Another lovely example of sherry finished BR, not sure how the triple distilation changed the spirit , but it’s very good indeed. Personally I do prefer its younger peated sister cask but they are both great and at that price of 60 quid for 15 yo Cask Strength whisky, excellent VFM.
Score: 88/100
