I’ve been meaning to try the new 1824 series for some time now, and fortunately been able to score a wee sample of each. I suggest you have a look at Phil’s guest post about the launch event of this series of whiskies, where you can find some more background info. So this first one is the cheapest of all four and is said to contain malts aged 9-15 years which were all aged in sherry casks of some sort (no more info is provided). As such it’s supposed to replace the 10 yo expression, as an entry level Macallan.
The Macallan Gold – 1824 Series, 40% , £35.95 (master of malt)
Colour: Well, gold… sort of.
Nose : A rather shy nose at first with bit of honey, some cocoa, fruit (mainly apricot) , with a touch of wood. A light nose, yet enjoyable, if not very complex.
Palate: Spicier on the palate , that’s for sure: malty, and nutty, with a bit of bitter coffee there.
Finish: Bitter dark chocolate, malt and nuts.
A fine entry level dram, but nothing you will remember long. Nice as a start for a whisky session, or just as a summer dram, nothing fancy. I think you can do better in terms of price vs. quality ratio. But, still it’s nice.
Score: 82/100
Many thanks to LH for the official sample
