Joel and Neil, are a lovely duo , funny wacky, and very much into whisky. Having met them on a few occasions, I can say they really love doing what they do which is writing about and drinking whisky. As you well know they have embarked on a mission to bottle whisky from A-Z, and each year they release a special bottling from a distillery / whisky company with that letter. So far we’ve had the Arran single cask and a lovely Benriach Single cask (which I have and enjoyed). This year they chose a different way of attacking the letter “C”, and teamed up with Cutty Sark’s Master Blender Kirsteen Campbell to create their on take on Cutty Sark. They did me proud by bottling it at 90 proof (UK) which is above 50%, and awesome for a blended whisky. You guys, Rock!
I debated if I were to buy this bottle or not, and gladly I got a wee sample sent over by the kinds people of Cutty Sark, so here are my notes.
Caskstrength and Carry On (Cutty Sark) , 51.40% , £34.95
Nose: Lemon pie. Yes. Spicy lemon pie. Isn’t. It nice? Very fresh. Not a hint of smoke. Summer in a glass. Fresh Granny Smith apples. Lemongrass, Fresh with a capital F, but also zingy. Quite youngish, with the apple-peat combo that speaks of its youth.
Palate: Big peppery entry. Spicy and chilly hot. Abv. to the Max! this is some muscular blend ! let it rest a bit then you are off to malty realms , touches of apple and pear in the background too . Then dry.
Finish: Dry. Spicy. Peppery, and a distant echo of apple.
A mighty blend in terms of ABV% , very lemony, summery, but also biting with lots of pepper and Chilly. Could be nice neat, or even better in a nice whisky cocktail. It’s pretty much a Cutty sark on steroids, and as such It’s one of a kind. I am not sure if this one is what i will get next, but it’s worth getting if you’re a fan, or just like to have a special blend in your bar.
Good work Neil and Joel! , now waiting to see what’s next for the letter “D”.
Score: 83/100
