If you remember well, the last batch from Wemyss Malts included 4 expressions 3 of which i have reviewed so far (here, and here) , and with the food (or drink) comes the appetite, and I am very happy to review the last, but certainly not the least: This 20 year old Ardmore single cask. now Ardmore is usually thought of as very smoky and peaty among the Speysiders , while this one is really very gentle in this respect. Do not expect something like the Ardmore Traditional, which is major peaty or other much peatier casks used for the Peat monsters for example.
Wemyss Malts “Mellow Mariner” ,1992 vintage, Ardmore , 46% ABV
Nose: sweet candied almonds and brine. Red apples ,some crashed grapes and a bit of an earthy feeling. Earth and brine. Lovely.
Palate: peppery entry the back to the red apples and matiness from the nose. Quite sweet and creamy with malt galore.
Finish: This is the best part : some hints of peat, and brine, with some butter sprinkled with salt on toast.
A real nice dram, but very light on peat, ending nicely on the brine. If you’re into serious peat, look elsewhere (some nice Caol Ila or Bunnas from Wemyss), but if you are into an elegant dram, look elsewhere. Good mouth feel even on the watered down ABV. Again, good selection of casks there.
