Time to take a wee detour from pure whisky and malt and try a pre-mixed cocktail from Master of Malt. Cocktail purists will say this is Blasphemy and that you should make yours at home and play with the different ingredients and variations, and that making this one is not a big deal. All is right, but there is a market for those pre-mixed cocktails, let’s say you do not know much about Alcohol, or you are just plain lazy and have kids around and you do not want to invest time an energy in all the mixology business. Master of malt have thought about this and have bottled quite a few cocktails to be ready and served in seconds.
The concept of the ‘Vintage Cocktail’ range is simple – you get all the ingredients for a superb cocktail pre-mixed, all you have to do is pour it over ice, stir, then strain off into your glass and garnish (in this instance with a slice of orange peel). Each bottle carries a stamp showing its year of manufacture.
This time I’ve tried the Old Fashioned Cocktail : a mix of year old small batch bourbon with a high rye content, as well as a blend of cocktail bitters and orange peel. let’s have a go at that shall we?
The Old Fashioned Cocktail 2011 , 41.80% , £39
Nose : Spicy rye, with quite a bit of sweetens, vanilla, ginger, orange and herbs. lovely and very inviting.
Palate: The rye is evident here, with a lovely rye, that combines nicely with bitterness of spices, and the oranges. a bit of caramel, and sweet with a dash of chocolate, and cocoa powered.
Finish : Bitter orange and herbs with a hint of cinnamon.
in one word:
Easy, lovely and the ladies would love it. great for parties, and such events when you want to prepare drinks in no time and with minimum effort. I know my wife would love this one.
Very nice, and there is also a 2012 version of this cocktail available
Slainte!
