Another one of the SMWS bottle share by the good old Sjoerd from NL. Time to go through that bunch, methinks. And today : A Mortlach! Ah, I do love those meaty Mortlachs, and was hoping this one will be one of them. But, not this time. This was a very different story altogether.
SMWS, 76.83 ‘Cocktails after Rugby’ 15 yo
Nose: A lot of malty goodness. Vanilla and honey liquor. If you look well you’ll get some star anise, Damp wood. Apple & Pear peel.
Palate: Sharp entry With lots if Barley sugars. Some earthy notes a well. Wood , sawdust. and a bit of smoke. yes.
Finish: Malt. Wood. Cherries with a bit of Smoke. Sugar.
A very nice dram, although not a sherry monster and no meaty oxtail sort of stuff I quite like to get from those Mortlachs. Not quite sure about the name, but hey, they are quite imaginative there at the SMWS. A very classic sort of whisky, and very surprising this profile comes from a first fill sherry cask. One would think after 15 years in such a cask we’d get more dried fruit and intense sherry influence. Wonder which kind of sherry it previously held. Not PX surely, maybe Fino?
Score: 85/100
