Last week Balblair distillery has released a 2nd batch of their 1975 vintage. The new expression has been matured in American Ex-Sherry casks (rather than European ex-Sherry casks of batch #1 ) and is bottled at 46% , NCF, and no additional colouring added. A press event was held and UK whisky bloggers and press were invited to the distillery to celebrate. In addition an online twitter tasting of two new expressions (this one and the new 2002) was held that Tuesday, and as much as i wanted to participate, I knew there was a good chance of Israeli postal services not delivering the samples in time, and so it was. I was happy to get the samples a few days later, and set to taste both expressions right away. I’ve heard good things about both but especially about this one, and was keen to try… Since visiting the distillery last year, and tasting quite a few of their young and old expressions, I’ve really grown to appreciate their malts, and each new addition is welcome, especially that 1975 is my birth year, and all whiskies created that year are wonderful (rather subjective, but true in my mind.. )
Distillery Manager, John MacDonald : “The 1978 Vintage is a very hard act to follow but I am confident that this American oak-driven expression will be well-received by single malt enthusiasts the world over.”
Balblair 1975 vintage, 2nd edition , 46% ABV, £235.00
Nose: Starting quite zesty with orange peel, some old bookshelves, Like entering a very old library with old wood shelves, chairs and tables, some wood resin. Tropical fruit sweetness, with a dash of honey, Sultanas and apricot. add a little wood spice, a sprinkle of cinnamon and you’re done. Can’t ask anything more from this nose. It’s Astounding.
Palate: Now let’s dive in. Oak a plenty, with ample malt, and dried loveliness of sultans, a citrusy edge, and plenty of old wood. The oak and lovely zest are well integrated and It feels soothing and prickly at the same time. Some chocolate covered nuts and candied fruit, with a touch of exotic fruit here too.
Finish : fruity, zesty with a touch of cocoa powder and oak.
An excellent dram.I like this style very much (cheers, Stuart), and would love to have this one added to my whisky self (as long as it’s not stolen – don’t even ask!).
Score: 90/100
Many thanks to LD of Alembic Comms for the official sample – much appreciated.
