Ok, Men o’Quaich take II. this time we’re off to the lovely Mortlach distillery located in the town of Dufftown. I’ve had quite a few of those (Mortlachs) And i am a fan. so, high expectations!
Another expression from this lovely collection, and this time a Mortlach. this was poured into a fresh sherry Octave cask, and spent another 8 months inside before being bottled at Cask Strength. Only 72 such bottles, at 51.2%. Let’s try, shall we? will this be a meaty Mortlachas we are sometimes accustomed to?
Mortlach 1993 , 18yo , 51.2 % ABV , distilled 9/1993 bottled 7/2011 , 72 bottles
Nose: Starts flinty with spent matchsticks, and a few distant fire crackers Then on to some ginger powder, shitake mushroom ,apple vinegar, and traces marshmallow, and candy i remember from my childhood. Not a bad nose, eh?
Palate: Much more smoke than I was expecting , in addition quite a but of sherry but not very sweet and not thick, more like Fino. Musty and earthy and peppery with the ginger edge This is not your usual sherry monster Mortlach, Mister! No , it is not. so sherry heads beware!
Finish: Dry wood ginger and dry sherry .
All in all this is a nice Mortlach, but not the sherry monster, meaty thing i was excepting. ample amount of smoke and a lovely palate, make this a very very enjoyable dram for those who like this sort of thing.
Score: 87/100
Thanks you MS, for the lovely sample
Can these bottles be purchaed in any way?
