In the next couple of days I am going to post a few tasting notes of Exclusive bottling for The Whisky Barrel, which had a few such bottling made public to celebrate the new look of it’s website. The first is this Caol Ila, Old Malt Cask bottled by Douglas Laing which was matured for 27 years in a sherry hogshead, yielding only 120 bottles. 1984 you say? Let’s see how does this “big brother” fair.
Caol Ila Old Malt Cask 1984 , 27yo for the Whisky Barrel Exclusive , 52.4% , £99
Nose: The note is quite gentle, not very peaty and refined .Fruity with earthy peat sweet and brine. There are noticeable traces of wood and spices too.
Palate: Initially a pepper attack followed by an avalanche of peat, which can be expected of a Caol Ila, but much more intensive than the nose suggested. A few notes of gunpowder, ash and exotic fruit. Really powerful compared to the restrained nose.
Finish: Long with a lot of smoke, faint peat and Leather.
Bottom line:
I like Older Caol Ila with their finesse, and fruitiness, yet the peat delivery on the palate, and this one is no exception. It really benefits from the long sherry cask maturation, and I do fancy the mix of peat, fruit, and gunpowder. Lovely.
