A Tequila on a whisky blog? well, yes!
Those of you who read the blog regularly know that i am a whisky kind of guy, but sometimes i stray and visit other aged spirits such as Rum and Tequila. I was fortunate enough to be given a bottle of this lovely nectar to try and evaluate by the Israeli importer. At first, i didn’t think I’d enjoy that one as much, but it was really surprisingly good, so i decided to write a short tasting note.
This Tequila is an “Anejo” Tequila, meaning it was aged for a minimum of one year in oak barrels before being bottled. To be more exact, it spend 12 months in Ex-bourbon barrels which were charred, giving the tequila a lovely colour, and aroma of burnt wood, and smoke.
Now, let’s get going with the dramming , right?
Jose Cuervo Black medallion, 38% ABV, £30 (buy at TWE)
Colour: Deep Amber
Nose: Toasted oak, sweet smoke, vanilla, spices, and that distinct Agave nose. delightful, the smoke compliments the tequila.
Palate: Sweet bourbony feeling to it,a lot of vanilla,Toasted oak, quite a bit of spices (cinnamon, ginger, chilly).
Finish: Chilly,Cinnamon and Wood.
Bottom line:
A really good one in my opinion. i really liked the toasted wood/smoky profile of this one. Delicious to be drunk neat or on the rocks on hotter days (i prefer neat, but a tequila should not be drunk too hot)… Lovely stuff from Jose Cuervo.
God Bless Mexico.
I’ve always stayed away from cuervo as a sipping tequila – it’s usually a mixer but this one being a cuervo Anejo, interesting!
Might have to give it a go. Passover is coming around the corner and I’ll need to sip on non-grain based spirits.
