Blind Tasting Competition Day 4 : Ledaig 8 yo [Whisky-Fässle]

After a shitty nose day (could barely smell that Balvenie), yesterday was much better, with me able to tell the whisky at hand was peated (not that hard, but it’s something), and after the fiasco of the other day things improved with me able to tell which distillery it was. This time after sniffing i got that farmy sort of …

Blind Tasting Competition Day 2–Glen Garioch 1990 [Kintra]–or RTFM!

Always trust your gut feeling. I usually follow that rule, but yesterday I did not, and scored badly because of that. I have no idea but I wanted to put Glen Garioch as the distillery ( I was wrong about abv, and age too), but I don’t know why, I decided against it.
Always RTFM!! (in case you’re not sure what …

Blind Tasting Competition (BTC) 2014- Day 1–Longmorn 17 yo , 1996 [Van Wees]

Day one of the competition and I was sure I was going to embarrass myself by making foolish guesses, but as it happens, I was not THAT off the mark. It was clear this dram was sherried (colour and nose), but what distillery? Initially I thought it might be a Aberlour (big sherry and all) or GlenDronach (some single cask). …

Bruichladdich 12 yo First Fill Sherry cask (The Maltman)

This very interesting Laddie was distilled Sept. 2001 and bottled January 2014. A total of 492 bottles were filled from cask #326 (Oloroso). A first fill laddie is something I do not think I sampled recently, and It was my first Laddie from this bottler (The Maltman), so I really did not know what to expect (other than BIG sherry).
Bruichladdich …

WhiskyBase Burnside 1989 [Balvenie]

Whisky base the incredible source for anything about a whisky bottle you might be looking for does not need an introduction. To celebrate their 50,000th!!!! (yes 50K) bottle on their ever expanding database, they have bottled this lovely whisky a “Burnside”. We all know there is no such distillery, and WB do not hide the fact that this is a …

Two very different Indie Macallans (G&M and Blackadder)

Macallan. That Iconic distillery, which by now I suspect is more of a monetary instrument in the whisky investment portfolio than actually a drinking whisky for most… Or is it?
With the surging prices of OB Macallans (Have you seen the price of say a 18 year old sherry oak? a 30 year old Sherry Oak? if you can find any), …

Mortlach 21 yo ‘Directors Cut’ [Douglas Laing]

There has been a lot of noise and dispute regarding Mortlach recently,  After the latest news from Diageo (if you’ve been not heard about it for some odd reason i can not think about, due to the amount of rants, dialogues and discussions online, read this ). Indeed I was one of those who ranted online, and I am still …

Single Cask Nation Laphroaig 6 yo

Time for a short interlude from the GlenDronach single casks (will continue tomorrow GD fans, so now worries , eh?) with a very different and much younger dram from Islay, and from one of the most interesting Indie bottlers : Single Cask Nation. I’ve tried a few of their earlier cask bottlings, and this is the first out of 3 …

Kintra Bunnahabhain 23 yo cask 5741

A few weeks ago I reviewed the Dailuaine 21 year old , and it set quite high expectations, a Bunna aged 23 years old, usually means fun. And this one is indeed a lovely drop of drammage. Bottled at 46,1% abv, it’s not the highest abv monster around (I wonder if this is watered down or just a really funky …

Tasting an amazing blend: Compass Box “The General”

So, £180 for a blended whisky? This is what I was asking myself when I saw the first PR for this one. It seems a lot. But when you taste this thing, it all changes. really. So what is this “General” whisky all about?  The story goes that Two different companies approached us Compass box with similar stories: they each …
