Tasting Laphroaig Cairdeas 2011 Ileach Edition

This year’s Feis Ile edition is carries no age statement, and should be fairly young. I’ve tasted the 2009,2010 (see Shai’s excellent guest post about FI 2010) editions and quite liked them, and got a bottle. this year I chose not to as shipping became to much of a hassle. Gladly Johan of WhiskyBlogg.se was kind enough to send …

Tasting the ‘New’ Laddie 10 year old

So, here comes the post about the much awaited Laddie 10. The first bottling of a 10 year old distilled after the distillery was “resurrected” so to speak. I was really keen on trying it and got a bottle even before i sampled it, seeing raving reviews from Serge(whiskyfun), and others. Today I’ve spotted another enthusiastic review by John Hansell  …

Wemyss Malts Take IV : Whispering Smoke 1981, Single Cask (Islay)

Time for the big guns: the Wemyss malts single cask bottlings, selected by Charlie Mclean. I’ve chosen to start with a peated cask, and IMHO the best of their bottling I’ve tasted to date. This one was distilled in 1981 , bottled 2011, at 46%(why?) with only 228 bottles (to bad!), it’s sold out (no wonder) and it’s wonderful.

Tasting the Wemyss malts ‘Peat Chimney’

As a peat-head, no better start than a peaty blended malt for starting our little Wemyss malts series of tasting notes, right? This is a Blended malt (a blend of several single malts from different distilleries) with an emphasis on Islay malts, the youngest is 8 years old. Not much more information on the Wemyss site. Ready? Go.

Tasting the Ardbeg Alligator–finally

Exactly one month ago, the Ardbeg Alligator Committee release (for discussion) was released and i posted the official notes for it. It’s been very tough getting hold of a bottle down here in Israel (Ardbeg do not ship here, why?!), and finally yesterday i recived a wee sample of the beast kindly sent to me by a good whisky friend, …

Tasting Port Charlotte 9 yo, Single Cask bottled for whisky friends Denmark

In my daily ramblings in cyberspace I get to meet a lot of whisky friends from all over the world be it Europe America or Australia. I was fortunate enough to have met a few lovely Danish whisky lovers , one of which frequents Israel so we actually got to meet a couple of times. The last time we met, …

A different ‘Bunny’–Kintra Bunnahabhain 13 yo

Bunnahabhain is not my favourite among Islay malts, and the OBs tend to be very lightly peated. However the peated versions I’ve had are nice, and I have some very good memories of the 18 year old PX finish from last years’ Feis Ile (It was not heavily peated, but it was excellent, nevertheless). This one is indeed highly peated, …

Some smoke – Kintra – Coal Ila 1984 25 yo Single Cask

This is the first Kintra bottling tasting note, with more to follow. This one was distilled in 1984, Aged in an Ex-Bourbon Hogshead , Cask # 5395 for 25 years and bottled in 2010. Only 60 bottles were available). I’ve recently tasted a 30 year old CI bottled by MOM and it will be interesting to compare both.

SMWS Ardbeg , 33.70 , “Keith Richards Meets Socrates Classics”

The Second tasting notes of SMWS bottling, as promised. This time an Ardbeg, aged in Sherry casks (Sherry Gorda) for 10 years. A sherry Ardbeg is always something interesting, as most OBs are not sherry matured. I find that Sherry and Peat is a pairing i quite like (Uigedail for example, Classic of Islay 9 yo, Lagavulin 21 etc.…) . …

Tasting Six Isles Pomerol finish

It’s blend time again. This time a finished blends which i find very interesting. Originally Six Isles is a blended scotch from Ian McLeod distillers consisting of  whiskies from each of Scotland’s whisky producing islands of Islay, Jura, Skye, Mull, Orkney and Arran. This wee dram was further matured (finished) in Pomerol casks (from the Pomerol wine Appellation)
