Two Whiskeys to start 2014–Stagg Jr & High West Double Rye

Again, two samples I got from Phil, this time American whiskeys I’ve yet to try. I did try the older version of the Stagg a few years ago (and a few weeks ago the latest batch), and High west Rendezvous a long time ago. These are quite different, one a very spicy Rye and the other, well, a cask proof …

Tasting Pappy Van Winkle 15 and Corner Creek

Post Thanksgiving, two drops of liquid Americana. One is dirt cheap ($20 in the USA) and the other one a much hyped and sought after Pappy Van Winkle 15 which costs, well a lot, that is if you can buy it (Demand and Supply. and it’s in bloody crazy demand). Those two lovely drams were part of a 3 sample …

Wigle Organic Wheat Whiskey

Wigle? yep. Wigle (pronounced Viggle). I am not sure you have heard about this new distillery located in Pennsylvania  (I know I have not before i got sent a sample). But I’m always keen to get to know a new interesting distillery, and this one is pretty nice. First of all, I should thank Shai (@dsappl) whos recently wrote his …

Tasting McAfee’s Benchmark Old # 8

Before we begin let’s get over with the jokes about this being distilled by an Anti-virus software company and all  (quite a few remarks i got online when i posted about trying this one).  this Whiskey is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (meaning it has more than 50% corn content in it’s mash bill), but is also meant to contain …

Tasting Elijah Craig 18 Single Barrel

Time to taste some of the samples I’ve got from my good friend Josh (@cooperedtot). I’ve tasted the EC 12 before and liked it a lot, this one sadly is not available anymore, and discontinued due to lack of older stock so I am told. It’s an 18 year old single barrel Bourbon named after the Reverend Elijah Craig, who …

Bourbon time : Tasting Angel’s Envy

It’s about time I posted my notes on this one, as I’ve been meaning to for a long time. A bourbon. yes, but not any bourbon, but a very special one : finished in Port casks after being aged in fresh oak casks, as bourbons should.
Basically this is one is born out of love and passion , Lincoln Henderson’s, love …

Some Rye : Rittenhouse 100 proof bottled for The Whisky Exchange

Either you like Rye, or you don’t stand it. I happen to like that stuff, and though it’s not easy getting them here or for the matter in Europe, I do take pleasure in trying new expressions from time to time. When I visited Whisky Live last week I was given a wee sample of this one by a good …

Tasting Stranahan’s Colorado whisky

A little change today, with an American malt whiskey. Made of barley. and In Colorado. Eighty per cent of the barley used to distil this one  is grown in Colorado with the remainder coming from the Rocky Mountain region, which is nice. The process is interesting : The barley goes through a roller mill and then into 30 barrel mash-tun  …

Buffalo Trace Antique Collection Take IV : Sazerac 18

Perhaps the most well known whisky of the Antique Collection, after winning Murray’s Whisky bible whisky of the year in his 2010 edition and scoring a whopping 97.5 /100 score .  Again, this is a straight Rye whisky, which means at least 51% of it is Rye. So how good is this whisky, does it deserve the title? Let’s see.

Sazerac …

Buffalo Trace Antique Collection Take III : William Larue Weller 2010 Release

This is third post featuring bottles from the B.Trace Antique collection bottle share organized by Sjoerd.
This baby is a wheated Bourbon, and as such offers a milder , yet rich Bourbon not as bity as the Rye, but very different from the standard Bourbon profile. It’s aged for 12 years, having been distilled in 1998, and aged on the fourth …
