Bowmore hand filled 1997-2013 55.5% abv

I’m a sucker for hand filled bottles you can get only at the distillery, and most chances that you’re too if you’re reading this blog 😉 I was fortunate enough to get a wee sample when I traded samples over at Maltstock with the Spellers (Ansgar & Thomas). I had a feeling it was about to be a cracking dram when i saw the the lovely color and even one sniff from the sample bottled did reveal this is going to be a treat.

Nose: Brine , a lot of ash , peat and BBQ sauce . peat reek and hints of sweet desert wine . meaty , earthy and sooty with a certain medicinal quality to it.

Palate: Wham! Big ashy palate with a lot of wood smoke, ash, and peat, very sweet with a lot of sherry / wine influence, marinated meat kind of, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, pepper, and espresso.

finish: Sweet marinated meat, ash, peat, wood smoke.

In short: Lovely. lovely. lovely. A real shame I dont have a bottle. I’ve seen them going on sale for around 180 quid today on Scotch Whisky Auctions. Not sure if it’s worth that, but it’s brilliant.

Score: 91/100
