Tasting SMWS 29.102 : Laphraoig, Cowboys campfire dram

A few days ago I heard a bad yearning for a sherried peat smoke and ash monster and I immediately thought of this one. I wanted to try this one for some time and due to the heat and summer, my peaty whisky consumption was quite low. Nothing lovelier than a wee dram when A/C is on full throttle and house is freezing cold in mid summer at the wee hours of the night (ok, evening). This SMWS Laphroaig was distilled March 1998 and Aged for 13 years in a Refill Sherry Butt, sounds just perfect, right?

SMWS Laphraoig 29.102 , Cowboy’s campfire dram , 64.1%Laph_29-102

Nose: fruity, with some blood oranges, leather, medicinal stuff (wet bandages galore, and Iodine) , also nice sherry with dates and dried

figs, as well as dark olives. sugar (burnt) a lot of wood smoke, and some smoked fish, not sure which kind. but it’s there. lovely lovely.

Palate: peppery, smoky entry, then some sherry goodness with a lot of those dried fruit, leather, demerara sugar, espresso bitterness, chocolate dipped in chilly. then another wave of smoke.

Finish: Smoke, coffee, chocolate and burnt sugar.

lovely in any way. well done sherried laphraoig I am a happy cowboy now.

Slainte!

Score: 89/100

  1. Tried this tonight. What a dram (I even scored it 91). PS. Small spelling mistake in the brand name, there, Gal. It’s Laphroaig (with the o before the a). Just a friendly heads-up.
