We’re back from a little Hanukah / Xmas break with another one of Wemyss malts blended malt whiskies. If you recall I have reviewed it’s younger brother a few months ago (8 year old) which was very nice. This Blended malt is made up from 16 different single malts, with an emphasis on 12 year old Islay malt. I’ve noticed that Master of Malt now carries most of the Wemyss range which is good news for israeli readers (as MoM ships here) and most other countries which can benefit from shipping.
Peat Chimney, 12 yo, 40% ABV , 34.99
Nose: Fruity with pears and a lot of smoke, some Pepper , sweet peat and spices. Green apples too mix nicely into the mélange. Fruitier than the 8 yo and I think a bit more complex.
Palate: Initially very spicy and Smokey with quite some earthy peaty notes. Then getting fruitier with time as the smoke keeps its presence, but plays second violin some Cigar tobacco leaves aromas are also present.
Finish : Dry ashtray. Unlit cigar stub. Very long. Ashy and dry.
All in all a solid, very drinkable and fairly complex with the right balance of fruitiness and peaty ashy goodness for those who like the style. Good work.
Score: 85/100
official sample was provided my Wemyss Malts.
